Shot this sow this evening: She was DRT. Bullet entered behind the right shoulder breakingtwo ribs and leaving a 1.5" entry hole. Bullet did not exit. This is my longest muzzeleloader shot at an animal. Will lase the shot next time i'm down there.
Range was 225-250 yards and she was running full tilt. Held about 1' high and lead her by about 12 feet. SPlattttt! Hunting free ranging hogs with a front stuffer is really fun.
Gun: CVA Magnum Hunter
Bullet: 250 grain SST/Shockwave in red sabot
Powder: 140 grains of Goex Pinnacle 3F
Primer: Winchester shotgun
at a running hog.. that is an amazing shot. Not only long range, but well planned. And that bullet, how much penetration (obviously enough) did you get? Congratulations on a great shot and a great hog.

The bulletmade a big hole going in probably because it hit two ribs, then it tore up the lungs and diaphram: The heart was not hit.The bulletdid not hit the chestwall on the far side.
But I keep thinking of that old saying about a blind sow and an acorn.
Me too. i've been blessed withsome great shots on deer and hogs. My average for first round hits on running deer and hogs isjust over 60 percent. A little while back Ihit a running hog at550 yardswith my .300 Win Mag:That one had to be all luck.
That high tripod stand with its swivelseat an padded gun rests sits in the south center of 160 acres of wheat. i've killed11 hogs and 3 deer from that stand including a big doe at 412 yards with my .30-06.i've lased the distance to rocks, trees and bushes that are used for range markers.
