Default I need to know what to do once I kill a hog.

Basically how do you clean them. I'm going varmint hunting tomorrow and was told there'd be a good chance of seeing hogs, and to take them if I see them. Should I manage to kill a hog, do I need a scalding vat or something, or can I just clean them similar to a deer?

Clean them like you would a deer.....Good Luck

Edit: I will add thatI generally leave the hogs on ice for several days, let the ice almost melt down(dont let it melt all the way), drain and add ice....Do this 3-4 times, this takes any gamey taste out of the meat....

I have never skinned a deer, but I have skinned a hog. If it is a male hog, you want to be sure to cut around the knot-like gland on it's stomach, taking care not to cut it open (it will ruin meat).

Hunting hogs in hot weather can be tricky. Here in SWOK the daytime temperatures are well over 90 degrees. At90 degreesyou have2-3 hours to get the hogiced downor the meat will spoil.

I dont even worry about gutting them.

Cut off the hams, back straps and shoulders (thats where the bulk of the meat isgoing to be anyway)and get on Ice as fast as you can.

When I get home I take the skin off then place the meat in Ice and water with some salt, the salt helps get all the blood out, I change the ice and water daily for about a week. Cut up and enjoy

Thats was just a little 40lber for the smoker that was getting cooked as soon as I finished cleaning it.

I did notice you did not jump in and help either.

"Now I have killed a deer what do I do", you remember that statement

I remember help clean the last deer you killed! I had to help you find the stinking tag you blind old goat....remember the doe with nads? But I would agree with Kanga on take majority of meat and feed the rest to the yotes! If you have time and the place to do it and want to save the whole hog...bled and skinned as soon as possible and get it hung and chilled.I believe in hanging any game as soon as possible by the hams so fluids will run the the lesser part of meat to drain!
