After reading about different guns and loads for hog hunting, I thought some of you might find the following of some interest, would also like to hear your comments.
Each year I go to my brother ranch in West Texas mainly to hunt quail andwe also hunt hog, coyotes and bobcat.I usually use the 22-250 for coyotes and bobcat and rely on my 25-06 for hogs.During the summer I researched to find a bullet that I could comfortably use in my 22-250 for hogs, thus my one rifle could be used all the time. After talking with several knowledgeable reloader and with the bullet companies, I decided to try a load using Barnes new 53g XFB Tripleshock. It's a new solid copper bullet that stay together butthe tip open outward with four leaves that act like a broadhead.
I shot my hog with my 22-250 and am really excited about the results. The hog was a young boar, between 140-160#.The shot was made from 104 yards and when completely through both shoulder while raising holy hell with his insides. The hog went less than 10 yards.Barnes said their new all cooper Tripleshock would penetrate and it did.Am I excited about this new load? You Bet!!!!
If anyones interested, I pushed that 53g XFB Tripleshock out of a Reminton case with 35gr of Hodgdon's Varget powder ignited with a CCI 200 Primer.
Interesting to know Bg. I believe I would have to go with head shots with that one, JMO.
95% of the time we use dogs and side arms (.357 or .44), but I have taken a few with 100gr .243 and for rifle I favor the Rem .35. My weapon of choice is RifledShotgun and Winchester BRI's when no dogs are used.

They may be as hard as steel, but the Barnes bullet penetrated through both shoulder and tore up everything in between. Will get another chance to judge the performance of this round in April. If I can figure out how, I'll post a picture of the hog.

Never tried the Barnes, but have tried and still have 2 or 3 boxes of PMC "Starfires" in .30-30 which open up as you described about the Barnes.

I think one of the reason the Barnes did so well is that the solid copper bullet doesn't breakup, it holds together and with it opening up it acts like an arrow on cutting up things. I was amassed at the damage internally and how it penetrated not only the heavy shoulder shield but the shoulder bones as well. Would really like to see what it does on a 200 to 400# hog, maybe next trip!
Here's the Hog that fell to the Barnes Bullet from my 22-250. I gave up trying to figure out how to get the picture to show up without activating through a link. Maybe someone from administration can make it happen. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y209/Bluegunner/pig2.jpg
