Default I arrowed the toughest hog ive ever seen

I shot a hog this last Fri. at about 25 yards. The arrow was put right in the boiler room. Got two lungs, and nicked the top of the heart (all confirmed when I cleaned it). I was stalking with my compound and came up on some hogs by the river. I shot at and hit aboar, and it took off towards the river. It ran over 150 yards through thick brush to get to the river, jumped in the river and swam another75+ yards to the other side. It then ran up the river bank another 100 yards. Once it cleared the river, it hit a CRP field and ran another 500+ yards across the field. Once it cleared the field, it hit the highway, which is where I could not see it anymore. I gave it about 45min. to lay, then went after it. I drove along the highway to find the blood trail, which was easy to spot, it was pretty thick. The hog ran along the highway for about another 200 yards before dieing. I found it on the side of the road, in some brush. This thing was never jumped, it just ran. I was able to watch it for most of the trip from my vantage point. If not, it would have been a booger to find. I could not believe how far this thing ran. I have yet to have a hog run this far with a double lunger, muchless a nicked heart. I found it amazing.

Leave it to a newbie to post a nonsense story like that!!!

Just kidding. I've never had the opportunity to hunt hogs. My FIL lives about 1 hour north of San Antonio. Next time I am down there, I am definitely checking into it.

I shot a big hog with a 30-30 a while back, and I never did find it. From then on, I've stuck to mostly head shots and haven't had any run aways.

It just amazes me sometimes how far animals can run even after being hit with a very well-placed shot.

Newbie, lol. Ive been shooting these things as long as North west Texas has had them. My first hog kill was with a recurve bow back in the 80s. Yea, you need to give it a try, lots of fun.

I had to post this story because Ive never had an animal run that far with both lungs gone and the top of the heart with a hole in it. Ive tracked these guys for about the same distance, but it was with a single lung shot, never a double lunger.

North Texas,
That is what I do with a rifle, but an arrow will not penetrate their thick skulls. OR I assume. I am pulling 72lbs with most of my compounds, and even at that, I dont trust the arrows penetrating all that well. Ive done many euro mounts on these guys and they have the thickest skull of any animal ive seen. Only one thicker is a bear mount I helped a guy do. Here is a pic of one of these guys skulls I did a while back. Its hard to tell in pics, but believe me, its thicker than it appears. It takes much longer to bleach a hogs skull than just about any other animal.

Sorry ma, no pics. It was hot so I had to get it quartered and on Ice pertty quick.

Burnie, skull penetration is possible. I have hit them with an arrow right behind and below the ear and dropped them on the spot. I won't try this shot at over 10yds. but it can be effective. 10-20yds I go for the neck any further and its vitals.

At least you got to see him do it Burnie. I tell people all the time that we have had perfect hits and still never recovered the pig because we had no blood. They ask me what type of broadhead should they use. I tell them, one that makes a lot of blood real fast. Forget this tough broadhead non-sense. Whatever makes alot of blood right away, I am for and your story is one of many reasons.I believe every detail of that story especially coming from you Burnie.
