Ruger M77 Mark II , Trigger is hard as hell what to do with out spending big $$$$$

I have a ruger M77 Mark II IN 300 Win Mag I have had the gun for years and have just had hand surgery for triger finger witch means my knuckles were sticking when i would bend them and now i only have 50% of strength in my right hand permanently. so what do i do about a trigger in this thing that is hard as hell to pull without getting a full blown triger job done to it or after market triggers. is there a spring or somthing that can be changed or somthing like that. any info would be great, thank's......

That is fairly tipical of the Ruger MKI's. I done a trigger job on both of mine, got the trigger pull down to about 1 1/2 - 2 lbs. Both break clean as a glass rod. It is a very easy prosess, take it out of the stock, remove the pin that holds the trigger in place and polish it were the trigger and sear meet. I used a fine diamond hone to do mine because stainless is hard, and the diamond stone will remove the material alot quicker. Do it a little at a time and reassemble it and check trigger pull till you get it where you like it. If you take off to much it will go off when you drop the bolt, if you do this pull out the sear and remove a little from it to take up what was removed from the trigger, I did that on my 223, not a problem to fix. I did my own and saved about $250 and both of them have better triggers than my rifles that have custom triggers on them. Becareful not to lose the spring, and DO NOT modify the spring, it will cause the trigger to have creap if you try to shortening it.

Sounds great fritz, I will tackle it this week end. you are the only one who replied and i thank you for that. Right on........

No problem. The Ruger MKII has the most basic trigger set up I have seen. I was skeptical about messing with mine but I had planned on ordering a Timney trigger so I figured I had nothing to lose. My dad did his years ago and told me how to do it. It works great. Just take your time and check it often, it doesnt take much. You dont have to put it back in the stock to check it, just put the spring in, put in the trigger and slide in the pin, and check the pull. When you get it where you like it, put it in the stock, tighten everything down, cycle the action, leave the saftey off and hit the recoil pad on the ground several times pretty hard just to make sure it doesnt go off. Thats it.

I believe you can also get a spring kit to "lighten" things up a bit. Check Brownell's.

Here is a link I found last night that you might want to check out. It talks about creep, and overtravel, neither which I ever had, before or after, and of course the trigger pull. There is also a drawing you can click on.

Here is the link,

Here is a post from someone else on a different website, you might want to give it a try first. I didnt fool with the spring because my dad told me not to. But it sounds like lessening the tension on it might work too.
Here is what this poster wrote.
I have a MKII 300 Win Mag with a stiff trigger. Do not have an acctual calibrated weight scale. I just used a fish scale i have and my pull was unofficialy 5.5 lbs from the factory. All i did was take out the spring and replace it with a shortened spring out of a ball point pen, resulting in around 2.5 lbs pull weight. Easy(cheap) solution to try and see how it feels.

Cheap and easy, definitely worth trying before you start polishing.
