Default 45-70 Results

I got me nice looking 45-70 1895G with 22" barrel. Got it for 300 dollars. Went to the range while ago and got me some Remington 405gr just to try it out. I was hitting quarters at 25 yards, but I can't see anymore. I was barely seeing at 25 and it was fuzzy. Maybe its just a bad day for my diabetes or something but with my new prescription and all, I was hitting 5" groups at 50 yards. I don't shoot open sighted much but was surprised how bad I was. I even got those big orange targets so I could see it at 50 yards. I was going to get a peep, but would be luck to hit at 100 yards.

It has been 5 years since I seriously shot open sighted.

Guess I need a scope.

I have trouble with open sites as well. I have the same eye problems besides having lost my master eye in an accicent. This said, I do shoot a peep sight much better than open iron sights. I quess when it comes down to it though a scope is the answer. I have an M8-4X leupold that I use on my 44 Mag rifle and my 45-70. I also have an old Redfield Tracker 2x7 that works well. I have a new 1.5X4 power Bushnell Trophy model made for shiotguns and Muzzle loaders that I haven't had a chance to try. I have the same trouble with my Muzzle loaders but we can't use scopes during the Muzzle loader season. A fact that discriminates against older hunters and those with Bi Focals. I am lucky in that I can see sights pretty well out to 100 yards.

I myself also had an eye injury, from a chainsaw incident when I was 18 in my right eye. I can't change over to left hand. I guess I can, but thats just too wierd. From this accident, I am left eye dominant and of course right handed. I remember off the bench when I shot my 7400 open sighted, and a few more rifles that I was hitting 3"-4" groups at 100 yards. Now, I can't even find the center. Wierd thing is I don't know when it happened.

Bigcountry,

The Limbsaver recoil pad for the 444 will NOT fit the 1895 in .45-70. I bought one to find out myself. The height is about right but it is too narrow and the screw holes don't line up. Guess I will try it on my 870.

Don't give up on your Marlin. I took mine to the range last Friday and tried a variety of ammo. The Remington 405's and 300's were OK out to 50 yards. They really spread out at 100. The Winchester 300 HP were better. Got about a 2" group at 100 with them. But the Winchester Supreme 300 PG were the poop! I included a pic of my best 100 yard group on the left. The group on the right was before my final scope adjustment which is why it was high. It figures that my rifle likes the most expensive ammo available. Rumor is that Winchester is going to discontinue it also. Guess it's time to give in and buy some reloading equipment.

Put a scope on yours and see how you do. The only time I wouldn't have a scope on a rifle is if I was hunting dangerous game and needed something really fast pointing. I don't shoot at running animals so I don't see a reason not to use a nice scope to make sure I get a good, clean shot. I have the Bushnell, Dusk to Dawn 3x9 with the 6" of eye relief. I would have liked less magnification but it was laying around doing nothing so I put it on. It is mounted far enough forward that I never thought about it hitting my brow.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hey G2, I called Pachmayr, they have one that is 4.59" X 1.538" that they say is made for current Marlin 1895 straight grip stocks. Limbsavers for the 444 is 4.7" X 1.6".
