Default Ok, gunsmiths what do you think

A couple of weeks ago I got the idea of rechambering my old 303 Savage. Thanks to the good advice on this board, I decided against it. I now, however, am toying with the idea of rechambering my Marlin 336 in 30-30 to something else. What do you think would work out relatively easily? I got this idea after a guy the other day was telling me how he recently rechambered his Marlin in 35 Rem to a 358 Win.

My initial thoughts here are for a 300 Savage, but I'm not sure how easy that would be. What do you all think?

One thing about a lever action one can,t get to carried away due to pressures involved.Do you want to go bigger,do you reload, how much do you want to spend? these are some questioin that need to be addressed so someone can make a proper descision for you.Have you thought of the 30-30 Ackley imp. It would be resonablely simple and give you more power to your 30-30. If you do reload,i use to use 130 gr sierra bullets rather than the 150,0r 170 gr bullets and got more vel out of the 130.It was pretty hot,and in the Ackley cartridge it would be even hotter. If you want to go bigger ,then ask and well go from there then. vangunsmith

I'd rather go bigger. A couple ideas I had bouncing around were 300 Savage, 307 Win, 356 Win. What else are you thinking about? Money isn't really a concern, but for arguments sake, let's say $500.

Don't convert any lever action gun to an Ackley Improved. It is not a good marriage.

How about a 32 Win Spl; I think it's a 30-30 necked up to 8mm.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Instead of going throught those headaches, just buy another gun i guess. The 300 sav.has a different rim case than the 30-30. Nothing wrong with a 30-30 they are under rated and most shots are around 75yds or so.what are you going to hunt? And i don,t think po ackley was a man with limited limitations,he knew others thought. vangunsmith

Weird timing. I was just browsing sixgunner.com the other day and found an article about a marlin that was blown apart after shooting a few thousand maximum pressure loads through it due to metal fatigue. Unfortunately the site seems to under construction right now and I can't give a link.

I would leave it as a 30-30.
I don't know too much about the .358 win (isn't based on the .308?) But the 35 remington won't offer you anything much in better performance and the ammo will be much harder to find.
