Although i own a Ruger 10/22 i don't like it because it feels like a "beached whale" in my hands!!! Maybe that won't bother you??? I do own several different 22's, but the 22lr i use the most (rifle) is a Remington 552, it's very accurate, well made and is slim and trim! I think it's a better 22lr than the Ruger, but to each there own!

The 22lr handgun i use most is a S&W model 18 and i've drug it all over and shot a ton of small game with it!

Anyway, there's lots of choises out there, hit some gun shops and see what one you like best!!

Huntermike,
Marlin 925, 7 shot clip, buy two extra clips and keep them loaded in your pocket.
That will give you 21 fast shots.
If you are starting out and low on funds, I would start with this one.

Rifle: Ruger 77/22 bolt action or model 96 if you want a lever.

Handgun: Ruger Single-Six (available in various barrel lengths, blued or stainless)
Recommend stainless with 5-1/2" barrel.

Other possibilities for a rifle would be Remington 572 pump action, or Marlin 39A lever (or a 39M if you can find one without having to pay too much for it).

I love my Ruger 77/22 all weather. It will shoot every type of ammo I put through it very well ( except stingers). I can put 10 shots in one hole the size of a nickel at 30 yards and I can put 5 shots in a 1/2" at 50 yards with CCI Velocitors.

I wouldnt trade this gun for anything. The trigger can be worked on just like the M77 MKII, I took mine down from 4.5 lbs to 2 lbs.

Any good .22 will work fine for what you want it for. I shoot a Marlin bolt action as well as a Ruger 10/22 and both are fun to shoot. As far as pistols you can't go wrong w/ a Ruger Mark II target model.

Can't go wrong with a 10/22. Also look at the .22WMR and the .17 HMR if you want a little better preformance. But I have killed many a raccon with the plain old .22LR.
Good Luck.

When I had coon hounds I used to take my old Ithica .22 singel shot with iron sights, the gun weighed less than 5 lbs.! I would look for something light to carry because of all of the walking you'll do...
