Default new scope for a varmint rifle

Ok I have a 243 Winchester model 70 with the target barrel and heavy forehand for bench shooting. Anyway it was used by my grandfather for groundhogs back in the 60's. He passed in August and I wanted to get a better scope for the gun as the 12 power scope on there has poor clearity now and i think adds a lot of weight with it being about 3/4 the length of the gun if you know what I am talking about. Anyway I want to get a variable scope so I can focus on close targets say 80 yards or so on up to the farthest I have shot at game being 400 yards.

What are you suggestions for power and possibly a brand of scope that is good that wont kill my savings account. A guy who owns a gunshop said Swift makes a good scope at a lesser price then others... and comments?
Thanks

One scope I think that would work very well for your 243 would be the 6-20 x 40mm or the 4.5-14 x 40mm Weaver Grand Slam. For some reason this brand of scope gets no recognition for it"s quality and clarity of optics. I have the 6-20 and works very well for my 22-250. I was very impressed on how easy I can dial the power ring compared to all my other scopes. It also has finger control 1/8" minute of angle which I found very nice to sight in with pin point accuracy. This is there wed site if you"re interested. www.weaveroptics.com Good Luck

Ok thanks...the weaver scopes look good but the link to check dealer prices fails to work, do you have a estimate of what it would cost?

I bought mine from Cabela"s but they have dropped the Weaver line for some reason. You can check this site but I have never dealt with them. Maybe some else can help you in finding a dealer for the Grand Slam.

Mueller Eraticator

I hear great things about these scopes, google "mueller eraticator"
They have been getting really good reviews.
