280 REMINGTON VARMINT CARTRIDGE

DOES ANYBODY KNOW OF ANY FACTORY LOADED VARMINT CARTRIDGES FOR THE 280? WITH IT BALLISTICS, THE 280 WOULD BE GREAT, BUT NOBODY I CAN FIND FACTORY LOADS A VARMINT ROUND.

I don't think anybody'd want to shoot a .280 at a dog town. Too much recoil for all that shootin'. Bigger, and less plentyful varmints, die just fine, when hit by big game bullets.

No factory loaded varmint rounds for the 280Rem. That's one reason I chose to get a
270Win. several years ago. Of course, there's only one for the 270Win., the 100gr. by Remington, but as luck would have it, it shoots pretty good in my rifle - about 1" to 1-1/4" at 100yds. Should be good enough for most shots at chucks, coyotes, etc.
The rest of my "varmint" shooting is left to my Ruger 77/22 target rifle in 22mag.

A bit expensive IMO, but one option you might try for the 280Rem. is custom ammo
at Conley Precision.

The .280 can be handloaded for varmints but it's sadly a very neglected round.....it's a better round IMO than the .30-06.....but sales never proved it....as a result it's nearly a dead cartridge.

If I owned one it would replace the .270 and the .30-06......but as you see ammo for it seems to be a handloaders game.

and the 280 does mighty fine with 120 gr hollow points @ around 3400 fps... woodchucks and crows never know what hit em

there ain't nothing neglected at all about my 280AI... the 280 was seriously mismarketed when it first came out... the second coming as the 7mm Express was also a serious screw up... fortunately there is a core element that still shoot the 280 and appreciate it for what it is... a fine all around cartridge that deserves better then the hand it was dealt...

Remington once loaded 120 gr. Hollow points for the 280. I picked up 3 boxes at a local gun show years ago for the brass. This load shot very accurately out of my bolt action and also out of my Dad's pump. I have seen these still available at gun shows in my area from time to time. You might try some gun shows or you will have to stick with a 140 gr. load. The 139/140 is the lightest factory load that is readily available. You could also try something like Conley Precision Cartridge if you don't reload. They have some light loads available but I don't know the cost. You certainly wouldn't want to set up and shoot all day with the 280. After 40-50 rounds you would definitely feel the recoil. The 280 is an excellent round and my all time favorite.
