I have a 10/22 and it seems to jam a lot. I don't shoot it much and I've never really bothered to figure out why it jams. Yesterday I was shooting it and realized I could shake the trigger guard and the whole trigger group would rattle in the stock. Is this something a gunsmith must fix or simply a screw that needs tightening?

RE: 10/22 jamming problem
Save your self some $$ and send it back to ruger.
Look on their web site for a customer service number.
Call and find out where to send it ,you can send it (unloaded) thru UPS,Fed-X or the local Post office.
Ruger normaly will fix and return for free.
All you will have to pay is the shipping to Ruger.

Are you missing one of the pins to the trigger group? My 10/22 has a little bit of play, but not much. One thing to do with a finiky rimfire is to fully disassemble it and clean it thouroughly. Blowback operated rimfires get a lot of carbon residue, unburnt powder and lead and copper flakes blown back into their actions, and over time this crud build up, combines with any oil and moisture in the action, and turns into a think sludge that'll eventually make the gun unreliable. If you haven't taken the gun apart, and cleaned out the bolt, receiver and trigger assembly with a product like carburator cleaner or Birchwood-Casey's GunScrubber spray, do that first.
After you clean it really well, if it functions better but not perfectly, try shooting a couple different brands of ammo. My 10/22 doesn't like the standard velocity stuff at all, and the one ammo it shoots perfectly is the Winchester Super-X high velocity. I found this out through trial and error. If doing the above doesn't work for you, then follow johnch's advice and send it in to Ruger, or take it to a gunsmith.
Make sure your rifle is clean. Have you tried a different magazine. That could very well be causing you the problems. That rattling concerns me, Apparently something has came loose.I suggest sending it back to Ruger. You'll have to pick up the shipping back to the factory in Newport NH.Depending on their work load, how long it will take getting it back. I've waited from a couple weeks to a couple months.Ruger will make it right.

Might want to try replacing the extractor. Also, check out the forum at RimFireCentral.com website. Lot's of good info. there on Ruger 10/22, and links to some good websites for custom parts, etc.

I had a brand new one once that would jam about every 3rd shot or so, after trying several different types of ammo and a couple different clips I gave it a swapping, the one I have now will shoot just about anything when it comes to ammo.
