i got one of those cheep 6 dollar wally world outers cleaning kits for shotgun.....the damn thing has a adapter from a small thread to a larger one. anyway the adapter and my .410 did not go togeather. i got a new rod made just for shotguns. now i got this extra rod.
so my question is will the 5/16" rod work in a .22? i dont really want to buy another rod...and if this one works ill get a brush and patch tip in .22
i did not know the size of a .22 bore so i thought id sign up and ask.....yes a noob here....been readin for about 4 monthes good info!
Don't bother cleaning a .22 rimfire, there's no good reason to and its a good way to wreck the barrel.

it needs to be cleaned out i got this gun in rough shape...lotsa of rust. i looked in the bore and full of old powder and crap. it needs a good cleaning.
No it won't work. 5/16th" is .3125 inches and a 22 bore is .222 (22 short, long or long rifle) or .224 (.22WMR or centerfire).
A word of advice though. Get a universal one piece cleaning rod. Those aluminum cleaning rod kits are junk (no offense). It will do everything from .22 on up to what ever. There are a number of them available. Dewey, Tetra, Bore Tech, Kleen Bore and a bunch of others as well.
Briman, why wouldn't you clean a rim fire? Their barrels get powder fouling, lead fouling, and can rust and corrode just like the rest of them. If you use the proper equipment you won't wreck the barrel.

thanks! just what i needed to know. yes i know the cheep rods are junk but with the little money i get i just have to make do with what i can get. ill look into someting that will fit in there...might of seen something at walmart. i looked at my local gunshop but the dang rods were bent and not stright. so i kept my money for something in better shape.

Do you have any proof that fouling will harm the barrel? I have a few rifles that I've been shooting for 20+ years without cleaning and they still shoot as good as new. I only shoot lead bullets through my .22s, leading is very minimal as there is a lot of lube on those bullets and they are driven to mild velocities at best. About the only fouling in the bore is a bit of carbon mixed with bullet lube which won't hurt a thing.
I'll stand by my assertion that there is no good reason to ever clean a rimfire unless it is a special case likeMiller just stated.

No reason to get all pissy about it. I just asked you a simple question.
And yes, not cleaning a barrel can cause it to rust. Even a rim fire barrel. Powder fouling will attract moisture inside the barrel and can begin to cause rust. As will condensation from a heated barrel in a humid environment.
Burnt and unburnt powder will also build up on the breech, the bolt face and inside of the receiver of a semi auto rim fire rifle and should be cleaned off regularly to ensure proper function.
All of this can be detrimental to accuracy, function and overall condition of the rifle.
Clean it or don't I don't really care it's your gun. But a rim fire rifle can rust from the inside.

Welcome!
Forget the junk at WallyWorld, K-Mart, etc. I went that route too, many years ago, when
I first got started. What a waste.
Anyway, I finally found a really good cleaning rod kit, and it's a "Kleen-Bore" brand.
It's universal in that I can use it to clean anything from 22 on up. I've had my kit now
for well over 10years, and no problems. Recommend their Universal Saf-T-Clad Cleaning Kit. You can also get the brushes, patches, etc. from Kleen Bore.
Here's a link to their web site; you can purchase on-line too.

BTW, clean those 22's also. They may not need it as often, depending on the ammo used, but at least you won't have to worry about ending up with one like you got now
to clean.
well for now im going to have to get whats cheep, and will work for now. this .22 is a old winchester bolt action single shot, model 68....realy old. it hasent been cleaned in over 30 years and has been in a shead for a long time. lotsa rust....i got the outside of the barrel and the bolt rather clean with wd-40 and a fine steal wool. now its time for me to put some TLC into the bore and see if i can clean it up good.
Interesting rifle! For the money I like Kleen Bore rods. I too have had trouble with 22's rusting if fired and not cleaning the bore. But then, we have humidity here, too. Anyway, just get a straight rod and be sure not to damage the crown, the part where the bullet leaves the muzzle.
