Its been so many years since I have purchased any factory loaded ammo that I am sort of out of the loop. Whats the lastest in self defense loads for the 9MM and 45 ACP? Legal eagles say that you should not use reloads for self defense in case a case would end up in court.
Gosh, James, I couldn't imagine reloads being an issue in SD. Has something happened there that changed the state? A judge (or a county attorney) would be looking at the cause, not the ammo stamp, as far as I know. What's up?
I'm an old goat on this issue. No substitute for accuaracy. A heart shot human can still run 50 yards if he has a mind too. Or do more perping if he has the will, too. Sad but true. I would still bet my life on a soft lead 44 Spec, 45 LC or even the 45 ACP, which I did for many service years. Or, if I am really in the _____ and I have access to it, 12 gauge with buckshot. Fortunately my life has been very peaceful lately.

I am partial to either Pro-Load or Corbon ammuntion for defensive purposes. Both are top end, high quality stuff. When Corbon discontinued Mrs. Charley's 9x18 ammo, I switched to Hornady in that caliber.
Handloads are a gray area, those that say don't use them cannot seem to quote any case where handloads used for defense have been a problem. Criminaly, I believe that it doesn't matter...if a situation calls for the application of deadly force, the instrument used is not going to be particularly relevant. On the civil side, you COULD be sued for wrongful death, or maiming, etc, and what was used may make a good deal of difference. Remember, in civil matters, you will be dealing with a real bottom feeder type attorney, and he will do his level best to paint you as a psycho who concocted this super powerful ammunition... "Ladies and gentlemen, regular store bought ammunition wasn't deadly enough for him, he made his own to inflict more damage, pain, and suffering on my poor client!". Never mind that his client was a crackhead intent on bashing your skull in, the jury will not know the difference. With all the high performance ammunition out there, why even run the risk? Getting sued is no fun, it will cost you time and money. Why give an opening?
personally i like the remington golden sabers. shoot great, low muzzle flash, bonded core really holds up well (i even tested it on I beams at the range). i use them both in my 45acp and 357mag.
Federal Hydra-shok in 9mm,and the good ol' 230 grain military round ball for a .45.

RE: Self defense loads
Extreme ammo is making a kick butt high energy low recoil round for both 9mm and 45 but the ammo is quite pricy 20-30 bucks for 20 rounds. I personally use 185 grain winchester silvertip hollow points for my 45 my second choice would be winchester SXT's, SXT's are the same exact thing as a black talon just different name now. hydra shoks are good too.
Id love to find factory loaded barnes XPB's though
