email me oldelkhunter, got another smith you can look into, he's also a long range shooter/hunter, has developed his own line of cartridges for it, Oh BTW he trues a rem 700 action to within 1/1,000,000th of an inch. And.... its a 4 week turn around on a complete rifle after he has all parts in hand

One question, how can somebody blueprint,an action to .0000001 of an inch when the firearm was NOT orginally made within those tolerances. One can,t pukt the metal back! vangunsmith

How does one go about measuring it

a millionth of an inch??? cut it heck... how can you even measure it without an optical comparator, microscope, MRI or one seriously sensative CMM... 1/1,000,000th of an inch... ummm you don't CUT those tolerances... you don't even grind those tolerances... you lap and polish and burn those tolerances... the suface would have to be nearly like glass otherwise the surface roughness itself would cause the dimension to deviate from the tolerance...

in machining... holding a tenth isn't all that difficult with quality equipment and procedures... any tighter and you have to start grinding to get to final dimension, most would grind anything less than .0005 when it comes to heat treated and tool steels.... plus one thing to keep in mind... cutting something to a dimension and tolerance is one thing... at one point or circumferance... toss in a little Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing on top of that for runout, concentricity, circularity, parallelism, true position etc and it's a whole nother world...

i do have a bit of skepticism with his bolt way to bushing clearances... those clearances are pretty tight for a dry sliding fit that will see a significant cycling usage and temperature range, not to mention any uneven moment on the action would very likely cause the bolt to bind in battery or contact surfaces to gaull...

some folks really don't comprehend what a thousandth of an inch is... let alone what half a thou is.... a piece of paper for example is about .0025 - .003 inches thick... and is thin enough to slice you like a razorblade....

Not bashing gre-tan, they manufacture some nice stuff... and i admire anyone who strives for perfection...

That is not Gre-tan boasting that came from a post here. I like Gregs work a lot not too sure about the sleeving though. I thought that best left to benchrest guns..like you say a little grit and its over.. Anyone that can build a very tight rifle if he is any sort of gunsmith will have longer then a 4 week wait.

Look at Ridge Runners post I mentioned nothing about those tolerances

sorry to also add to the confusion oldelk... i should have deciphered more clearly that i went through the link you posted and i was making the point to ridge runner as to the inability to hold a 1/1,000,000 th of an inch tolerance in normal machining... not that gre-tan was trying to achieve that level of precision...
