I've taken hogs and deer with my various .30-06 rifles. I love this old caliber. Plenty of power for the critters I chase, plenty of accuracy for the ranges I hunt at, and very tolerable recoil.

EVERYBODY needs a .30-06, and MOST folks need a .45 ACP, too.

Ditto

There is a reason this cartridge has been around for 100 years.
The trusty old .30-06

The 30-06 is a great gun with lots of knockdown power, I own a Remington 30-06 Sprg. and all deer killed with it drop dead instantly.

I have four, currently. Two are converted 1950's era sporters based on the 1903 Springfield and the 1917 Enfield, I have an early Remington 760, and a straight military M1917. The M1917 is used for informal cast bullet military matches, the 1903 Sporter was set up for Mrs. Charley to hunt whitetails with, the 1917 sporter was bought just because it was a pretty neat period sporter. The Remington was rescued for $50...it had been stored in a closet under some stairs, and had a major water leak go undetected for some time. The interior was good, but the outside was pretty rusted and pitted, and the stock was water soaked. I dried and refinished the stock, and had the rifle bead blasted and phosphated. Never had much use for a pump rifle, but the price was right.

of my plethora of rifles, two calibers occupy more than one space in my safe. I have 2 30/06s and 2 7mags. I was given a 06 (wooden ADL with a trusty ol *** built 3x9x32 Tasco that is still kickin today on another gun lol) when I was 12. That was 21 years ago (damn Im gettin depressed now!) and that ol 06 honestly has somwhere between 60-75 deer too its credit. I bought a 7mag as soon as I turned 18 and could legally buy a rifle. It only has about 20-30 deer too its credit. But it didnt take long to realize that inside of 400yds on deersized game, what the 7mag will do the 06 will do. And without much recoil, a 24"+ barrel and cheap ammo thats readily available. I rarely shoot either of them anymore, but I know in a blink that they are certainly MORE than capable of whackin em with authority!

The other two rifles were handed down too me over the last year or two by my step-father (who passed away last month so they mean ALOT too me so they will be kept). I look forward to carrying them occasionally.

I would cringe at the idea of only being able to own 1 rifle, but if I did and it was a 06 I doubt I would be any less of a successful hunter than I have been too this point!
RA

ps
I have 3 kids (4yr old son, 6 yr old daughter and a 9yr old son) and when they are old enough for a full sized rifle I will probably give them each a 30/06 when they begin to drive and hunt on their own. (That or a 300WSM, who knows what the future holds?)
