Default What do you guys clean you wood stocks

I know some guys that wipe gun oil on thier walnut stocks. (Caused them to swell some at the grip). Know some guys use furniture wax. I tried to just wipe them down.

Lets say you ahve a AAA piece of lumber on a custom made rifel you paid 3K for. How would you care for it? Lets say they used hand rubbed tang oil on it.

Well I'll Tell Ya Bigcountry,,,,, If i had a 3K rifle i would'nt have to worry about cleaning the wood because it would be in a SEALD glass case . But all kidding aside , i just wipe them down with a soft cloth or like on my old Marlin ''mfg. 1949'' i use linseed oil.

I use regular furniture polish to clean it or a slightly damp cloth. If it is scratched and the original finish is oil like my side by side as per their directions that is what I am supposed to use. If a gun is that pretty and it is not a bluebird day outside then I put it in fiberglass and don't worry about it.

I guess what I am getting at besides trying to find a better way, is I see so many people pour hoppes high vis. oil on thier wood stocks and rub it in. I have a old shotgun where it swelled due to too much oil coming back from the reciever into the grip. Now its not fitted too well.

I am trying to put out the word that hoppe or your typical gun oil is not meant for wood.

Yes, if its a oil finish use tung oil,or furniture polish. Then if its got checkering put lemon oil on the checkering. Lemon oil will bring out and up the checkering sharp with a toothbrush. If its a Varathane or urathane finish, just wipe it down and off with a little wd-40 on a cloth rag. vangunsmith

on wood stocks, regardless of finish, use premixed Murphys Oil Soap. Cleans the wood and doesn't effect the finish.

I'm with vangunsmith............

Lemon Oil works very well for cleaning & treating the wood on an oil-finished stock. I wipe down my stocks with it with each cleaning. And about 2 or 3 times a year, I also handrub boiled linseed oil into it generously. Linseed & Tung oil WILL darken a stock with time, you if that is a problem - go sparingly with it and use the Lemon oil more often.

A urethane finish will just cleanup with water............. and the Murphy's Oil Soap is a good idea for these too as it'll take off a little more grunge than water if you have any on it.

Either some type of furniture polish like Pledge or Mruphy's Oil Soap on a soft rag. If I am using Murphy's I wring the rag out a good as I can, so the rag is only damp.
