Default stupid question about scope mounts

I know this is a stupid question, but here it goes. How do you know you can get a scope on a gun? I used my older carbine .44 ruger mag. open sights and want a scope on it now. It has 4 screws on the top, 2 in pairs. But the screws are very small. Does it hold a scope? thanks

Those screws hold a base on, that the scope rings attach to. Any gun decent shop should be able to fix you up.

sorry, I feel kind of stupid. I was just wondering if the screws on top were for the base of the scope mounts. I know of some rifles that dont have scope mount screws.

Hey Whitetail,

Those rifles you know of that aren't "drilled and tapped" for scope mounts? There the ones that WISH they were!!! :&gt))

Yes, that's the best way to mount a scope, useing the holes in the top of the receiver.

Any question asked is not stupid!! Thats how we learn! Been a gunsmith for 39 yrs and i learn something new each day! Most quality manufactors will have the top of the recievers drilled and tapped ,and that makes them ready for scope mounts if the owner wishes to install one. All the screw are usually the standard screw sizees for bases,so many companies make different mounts and rings to fit to your rifle.Just have a good gunsmith help you pick out the style you want, and have hhim mount your scope, and bore sight it for you. Then have fun.hopw i helped some. vangunsmith

The screws in the top of the reciever are called plug screws, the screws that are used to mount the bases will come with the bases.
