As long as the range isn't over 100 yards and they are hit well they are going nowhere fast. I used to own one and loved that gun don't know what made me sell the gun. It would be a short range elk gun at best.

A 44 mag carbine, when loaded with hot, heavy, cast ammo will knock the hell out of deer, bear, elk, and moose out to 150 yds.
My ruger deerfield likes 240 gr CorBon JHP, and gets over 2000 fps from the 18 1/2" barell. It is a great 150 yard deer, small black bear round.
The heavy CorBon, Buffalo Bore, and Garrett cast ammo shoots flat enough and hits hard enough to be effective out to 150 yds. Go to these links and check out he ballistics. Very impressive...and remember these are from 4 1"2 barells. Also, read some of the garrett cartride testimonials.

A .44 Mag. will put an awful hurtin' on a deer. I know an old timer whose hunted with one for his entire life and he swears by it for hunting deer. I love the big bores. They really slam the deer. They are just a short range gun. As far as hunting larger game such as elk, I really don't know. At close range, I would think it would be enough.
