I'd like to hear your opinion on a rifle selection. A recent post discussing the merits of Kimber Montana's vs. Remington Titanium got me going. If I were looking for a fairly light, durable and accurate gun for under $1,000, is it really hands down that the Kimber is the obvious choice? I'd like to stick with conventional calibers (vs. WSM's), which means I'd be looking at an 84M Montana in .308. The Sako Finnlights are nice and guarantee accuracy, but the "seam" on the bottom of the stock turns me off for that type of money (though I know synthetic stocks aren't exactly good looking anyway). The Kimber's stock is supposed to be extremely durable and well bedded, but some reviews I've read talk about marginal accuracy, which doesn't sound too good for $900+.
Bottom line, what is your suggestion for a durable, nice rifle for under $1,000? I've got plenty of other rifles and am ready to treat myself to a real nice, solid rifle. I predominantly hunt deer here in Michigan, but will occassionally go on elk and caribou trips. I'm concerned only about the rifle and understand I can buy a cheaper rifle and get a quality scope, etc.
What are your thoughts on a "nearly-custom" $1,000 production rifle?
First thing comes to mind is the Sako Mod.75 Hunter, which is available in 308Win., among other popular cartridges. I think they make one with stainless barrel/action and
walnut stock too - very nice. Only drawback I see to the Sako is the weight - a little on
the heavy side.
Next, and one I'm considering, is the "new" Winchester Featherweight, now available with
walnut stock, and stainless barrel/action.

I'm thinking about necking down a 300win mag to a .277(270)win mag. Of course Rcbs would have to build me a die set and have a reamer built. It would be a very nice long range rifle. Theres is the 270wsm and the 270weatherby but this is just something that I want to build. And it would knock there pants off with all that extra case the others lack.
