Default Which choke for slugs?

Just picked up a Rem 870 Mag Express, 12 ga., realtree camo stock and forearm, parkerized metal, 24" barrel with the interchangeable choke...currently with improved cylinder. I bought this one primarily for a slug gun. Is it okay to use the improved cylinder choke with slugs or should I get the open one? Thanks.

It really depends on the slug you are using. Some are smaller than others in slug diameter and some will perform better with different chokes.

I would try all chokes from cylinder bore to modified or maybe even full choke.

Assuming you are talking about using the foster type of slugs (rifled slugs).

Sabot alugs will need a rifled barrel or a rifled choke tube.

Here is some reading about slugs and slug guns you may find worth reading.

ditch the smooth barrel and get a rifled one. They are very widely available and can be had for around, or even under $100 on ebay. Then get yourself some copper solid sabot slugs, or partition golds...both are excellent...and sight her in.

That combo will be accurate with iron sights out to, or even past 150yds.

Only took me one shotgun hunt to ditch the smoothbore in favor of a rifled barrel with rifle sights.

keep an eye on ebay for one, make sure its a RIFLED barrel though, not a smoothbore with rifle sights.

Stick with the IC or if it came with a skeet or improved skeet use that choke with foster (Rem. slugger type) or Brenneke slugs .

If you want to shoot sabots you need to buy a rifled choke tube ,extended is better .
I have never seen real good groups from a rifled choke tube.

I shoot a skeet tube and Brenneke KO slugs and get better groups than a lot of sabot shooters at LOTS less $$

my thoughts exactly, but before I got my rifled slug barrel, I got the best results out of an IMP tube. But they still werent near as good as my rifled barrel.

Your fine using the IC. I have to agree with getting a rifled barrel with sights. Most states require front and rear sights when shooting slugs.

Thanks folks, appreciate the info. Wholeheartedly agree on the rifled barrel and while that's in the plan, weekend-after-next I'm going on a hog hunt in a area where it's shotgun/slug only. Won't have time to put the whole rifled thing together just yet so I needed to know about this IC choke. This 870 just happened to pop up at a good price so I went for it. The 870 is a reliable classic so I don't have any problem putting some more money in to it in the form of another barrel and a scope. Thanks again for all the info.
