Default Bullet groups for .30-06

Hey there, I know every gun seems to like a certain bullet a little more then every other one, an every gun is different. I was wondering which particular bullets people seem to of had the most success with. That way I can start with those and hopefully find one I'm happy with...thanks in advance

Oh yea, are there any benefits to coated bullets, or are you better off sticking to the pure copper variety??

GorV, that is a hard question to answer without a little more info. For starters, are you planning on hunting with your ought-six, or just punching paper? If hunting, what type of game?

I say this as the type of game is going to determine what type and/or weight of bullet. I have had good accuracy with 150-grain Nosler Partitions and Speer Grand Slams from my two -06's, and superior accuracy with 165-grain Nosler Ballistic Tips. They also shot 180-grain Core-Lokt's well (I haven't had the chance to try the 200-grain Speer GS bullets yet). However, while I can recommend the 165-grain BT's for deer, I would not give them the nod for elk or moose.

Tell us what you want the bullet to do and we'll give you some more data!

The 30-06 is known for not being picky about the bullet weights it shoots well. From 130 to 220 gr. All you have to do is find the particular load that works with that bullet. That's one of the reasons it remains a versatile cartridge. Most target loads are in the 165 gr. range, however.

Well the best bullet for deer I guess, but also the most accurate bullet for everything, the one that most people find to work most often the best in the most guns...

My 7600 Remington pump shoots everything about the same. Depending on how I am shooting, it groups everything into 1 1/4-1 1/2. However most of the rifles that I have seem to shoot Sierra Pro-Hunter and Nosler Ballistic tips about the best. As a rule if it won't shoot well with those bullets then its not going to be a keeper for me.

I shoot a factory 700 ADL with el cheapo factory Remington Express Core-lokt 150 gr. PSP's and get groups a little over 1½" from the bench on a calm day. It's not the best rig, and I'm not the best rifle shot, but it gets the job done.

My rifle ,a Winchester Classic Sporter (Controll feed) likes the 165 and 180 gr bullets best .The 150 gr and lighter are ok but a Nosler CT 168 balistic silvertip realy shines when loaded with IMR 4350.

150 gr corelokts shoot pretty good out of my ruger, I have asked many hunters who hav e hunted with a 06 for many years, and they all like the corelokts. I took a hog this weekend, I guess I jerked a little because I hit him in the jaw, and it blew his whole snout off.

I would bet that over the years, the 30-06 with Core-lokts has taken more deer and elk than any other combo. They have been around for a long time and are pretty darn effective. The 30-30 with the same ammo is right in there to.(core lokts)

Well first off are you planning on handloading or buying factory? If handloading, there are many variables involved in the most accurate bullet, i.e. powder, charge, seating depth, etc. If buying factory the best I can say is buy several boxes of different loadings and see which one shoots the best. For deer 150-165 gr are more than adequate.
