Default Minimum acceptable for 300lbs @ 300 Yards

What do you think the minimum caliber is for a 300 lbs thin skinned animal at 300 yards.

300 yards is about the limit (if not further) than I would feel confortable taking a shot in the right conditions.

Thanks for your thoughts

I believe a 243 with 100 gr nosler partition would be the minimum.

There are many other calibers that would be better suited out to this distance such as the 30-06, 308, 270, 7 Mag, 7mm08, etc.

good luck,

Minimum for 300lbs @ 300yds.: 25-06, 270Win., 7x57 Mauser, 280, 7mm-08, 308Win.

Now, if you're really a good shot, and using premium ammo, then maybe also include
260Rem. and 6.5x55 Swede.

Minimum caliber would be a 6mm/.243"...however, I think the question meant to ask what the minimum CARTRIDGE should be.

Typically, the .243winchester would be the minimum cartridge acceptable for this type of game....taking in account that in MANY states whitetail or mule deer can meet this specifications. However, if you're talking about a game species that AVERAGES 300# for an adult, you're going to need to step up to a bigger cartridge, I'd put the limit at the .25-06 or .260Rem.

However, if these specs are to be literally met as the MAXIMUM demand for this cartridge, the .243win is perfectly capable, and sets a fine dividing line.

If we're talking about bruins or elk that are almost always 300#, then a step up in power is necessary.

I think you are lookin' for a scientific answer where science doesn't apply. Find an artist with a rifle and watch what he does.
