Default Headspace problem????

I just bought a Savage Mod 11F in .300 WSM LOVE the trigger. Problem I'm having is during the break in (only fired 10 rounds so far) I have BLOWN 5 primers out the back of the cartridge! They are not just loose, they are blown out into the mag well when I open the bolt, which is hard to open when this happens. I am firing factory Win 150 gr ballistic tips. Now, I have been leaving a light coat of oil in barrel as Savage suggests, would that be enough to cause the back pressure I am getting or do I have a bigger problem? Help!

Sounds like a more severe problem to me unless you are leaving tons of oil and carbon in the barrel.

Wow, over pressure. What I would do to verify is get another box of ammo. Or if you have a gunsmith, check the headspace. If you have some guages like the stoney point head and shoulders, you can check the difference between you fire formed brass and factory. Also compare to another brand. I know ammo is expensive and your probably hesitate to shoot much more. I would be too.

Could be a bad box of ammo. Ain't the first time that has happened I would imagine.

Maybe be a bad box of ammo.

Could be headspace, that's easy enough to fix on a Savage barrel.

Could be a very rough chamber. When you fire a rifle the firing pin strikes the primer and the cartridge moves foward then the primer detonates then the case moves rearward against the bolt face and expands. If the chamber is too rough it will not allow the case to move rearward and this results in space behind your primers allow them to be blown out.

Could be too much oil inthe barrel. Liquid does not compress so if you got too much in there you could actually put an oil ring in you barrel. This happens when oil builds up in front of the bullet and finally the bullet passes around the oil and the oil forces the steel barrel to expand and you get a bulge ring in your barrel. Always wipe out the bore completely dry before shooting it.
Look down the inside of your barrel and make sure this has not happend before you shoot it again.

If you are blowing primers you have passed 80,000 psi unless #3 is happning. Excessive oil in the barrel will certainly do this.

Thanks guys, I called Winchester and gave them the lot number of the ammo I was using, they confirmed it was a bad lot and are sending UPS to pick it up. They said they had alot of complaints about the same type of problem....stated it was "old ammo" and the heads were not strong enough, said they would send new ammo to replace that would be fine. Time will tell!

FYI the primer pockets that blew out miked at .225
I beleive a pocket is supposed to be .210 right?
