Default Sighting in new shotgun scope.

I just bought a rifled barrel for my Mossberg 500 and also a 1.5x5 simmons pro diamond scope. I have always been a buckshot guy. What should i sight it in for? 50 yards or 100? i hunt both hardwoods where the shot can be very close and also hunt fields that can have long shots. i did take it out this morning and shot it at 25 yards then 50 yards. i was on at 25 and 50. i then tried out to 100 but was about 10 inches low. i ran out of sabots so i am going back out tomorrow again. Thanks for any info.

My father shoots a slug gun...i think its an older j.c. higgins pump with a fixed barel..he got it rifled out...he sights in it for 50 and 100 usually a few inches high at 50 and right on at 100...then he just judges ditance on the deer and adjust by aiming a little lower...i have always shot buckshot in jersey and will prob stick with it...i just dont like slug guns for some reason...especially where i go it seems that more than half of the deer are running by because of being pushed by other hunters and i thihnk its much easier to drop em with buckshot than trying to hit them running with a slug....3" 00 Buck copper plated drops em right in their tracks...

Several of the shotgun type scopes are parallax adjusted for 75 yards. Dead on at that range will certainly be shootable at closer ranges and also out to (and beyond) 100 yards. Different sabot's seem to work differently in different guns / barrels. Try several until you get the best. For my cannon it's Lightfield Hybrid EXP's.

I just got close to the same setup here. I haven't mounted my scope as of yet. It seems like if I try to get the scope mounted low to the receiver it wil be hard to get to the safety. If I get it up enough to reach the safety the scope is so high that I will need to add a huge comb piece on the stock. Did you mount to the receiver or do you have a cantilever barrel? what rings did ya go with? Did you have to add a comb piece?........... Anyway I can tell you how to sight it in. You want to be zeroed at 100 yards(when shooting sabots). This means that you will be around 2" high out to 100 yards. This is due to the fact that your scope (sight) is close to 2" above your barrel. Thats why if you zero in at close distances you will shoot way low at 100. I sight in 2" high at 50 yards. That will put me dead on at 100 and 2" low at 125 yards. Although you want to be 0" at 100 yards always sight in at closer distances (i.e. 2" high @ 50) because the wind can sometimes really throw you off at those greater distances. It's also a lot easier to see your impact @ 50yds vs. 100 yds. Hope I made some sense. Good luck them loads is $$$$$$

yes i have the mossberg with the integrated scope mount. so it is cantilevered. i use the 20mm-36mm mounts. i forget what make they are though. my scope is a 32mm. no i don't use a stock comb. it fits nice. the only problem is the eye relief. they say it should be around 4 inches. the only way i get the scope to fit is with about a 4.5 eye relief. i tried some 3 inch winchester sabots today but i'm going to try 2.75 lightfields tomorrow.

Wojo, I don't have the cant scope mount. Mine's on the receiver with a Weaver rail. I found some Burris rings 1/2 off @ Gaylans today. They were out of Matt black ones. I thought the contrast might look nice. I must say I wasn't impressed with the Burris rings at all. I ussually use Millets. You can see by the pic that when I tightened them down the plateing just pelled off in the thin part of the ring. I sure thought they looked thin in that area. I was able to get the scope in the right spot front to back OK. And the height allows me to get to the safety just fine. Although it's a little tough to get it back on safe. I'm just glad I am anal about getting ready for deer season and i'm getting a new gun setup now instead of October!!

so, so. I have a problem i need fixed first. i'm having a problem with my trigger. when i squeeze it, it doesn't fire. it might take 2 or 3 squeezes till it fires. so i'm really not ready because i'm not sure if it will fire. i can be right on then be 4 inches away. i'm in the process of doing a good cleaning of the trigger assembly and bolt ass'y. i'll try it then and if that doesn't fix it, i will take it to the gunsmith. i wasted 4 boxes of shells so far...$40 worth. but i can't wait till this baby is done and ready to roll. look out next season.
