Default .500 Smith & Wesson Magnum

Dirty Harry Santa brought my buddy a .500 S&W Magnum for Xmas. So, like little kids on christmas morning, (actually at halftime of the Steelers game) we took it out, and let a few fly.

WHOOO Man! I'm not really a pistol guy, but I couldn't resist tryin' it out. I'm not really sure exactly what in god's name it's useful for, or why he wanted it, but it sure is an experience. It almost jarred my pre-game pierogies loose when it went off.

Anybody else ever shot one of these things? opinions??

Yea, I like em. I think they will make a fine hunting handgun. I mean think about it, shooting a deer with this is like shooting with a heavy loaded muzzleloader. Not too much difference.

As much as I LOVE the handgun I am thinkin about having a barrel built for an Encore in the 500. Think about it, for fartsNgiggles why wouldnt a 18"-20" 500 Encore carbine NOT be the ultimate "brush gun" for big game?

But ammo sure aint cheap,

It should be a good back-up big game gun. A good close range stopper. It would be a pretty good hunting cartridge however it probably can't match the Encore for long range hunting because of the ballistics of the prett flat nose pistol bullets that I have seen. Cartridges like the 308 and 7mm-08 should out shoot it at ranges of 200 yards which is well within the encores range. IMO

A hunting buddy of mine has a gunshop and as soon as he was able to get one, we took it out and touched off a few rounds. I was surprised at how managable the recoil was. I live in KY and there's no real reason to have a caliber like that around here, plus the ammo is higher than a cats arse!!! I was at a gunshow and saw a box of Corbons for the .500 and 12 rounds was almost 40 bucks!!!! If I had the spare cash, I'd own one, but the cost of the pistol and ammo is just too rich for me.
