Default Who makes the best aftermarket stocks?

Looking to change the stock on a model 70 long action. I really like the looks of wood stocks, but this rifle really gets used and it is a matte blue finish anyway. I'm looking at H-S Precision, Houge, and Bell and Carlson. I want a solid stock not a hollow plastic cheapy. Anyone have any experience with this subject? Any recommendations?

Not if your worried about the weight of your gun you shouldn't. Laminated stocks are quite heavy because of all the glue in them.

I would go with a HS Precision stock. Good luck.

McMillan makes some very nice fiberglass composite stocks.

I agree 100% When it comes to high quality/durability I look at the trends of the bench rest crowd for accuracy and the military for durabililty. McMillan is all over both sectors. I have two rifles stocked in custom McMillan stocks, you pay more up front for them but they will last a lifetime. Almost any other stock I handled felt cheap in compairson. Check them out on the web http://www.mcmfamily.com/mfsinc_n/[/link]
Hundreds of police forces, the USMC and NAVY SEALS are among the elite who use McMillan stocks.

Here are some great stocks, the company is owned by none other than mark bansner, one of the better smiths in the country. I have one on a UR-1 7mmSTW mark built for me years ago

High Tech makes some of the lightest..Rimrock by Borden are also light and extremely strong as well as Mcmillan which tend to be heavier 32oz. Depends on how much weight you want to lose off the rifle. Mcmillans are solid glass with foam in the buttstock and the inletting is CNC machined. They still have to be glass bedded although they advertise drop in. Same goes for Rimrock. The High tech has foam in the buttstock and in the foreend. All are extremely strong and stronger then any wood stock. Like I said before it all depends on how much weight you want off the gun or in the case of looks the style. Mcmillan by far makes more styles then the other companies and will CNC certain barrel contours and triggerguards whereas the others will not. If your interested in a beautiful walnut laminate look at a serengeti stock. If you want beautiful walnut and want a an aluminum bedding block that is extremely stable look at accurate innovations. HS precision makes strong stable stock as well but they weigh more then the others and they feel like a club in my hands. Bell and Carlson is at the bottom of the food chain, they make a reasonably priced Fiberglass stock but they tend to be heavier then most unless they make a special run for one of the major manufacturers ie Remington Titanium,Weatherby Fibermak,Vanguard.

Mcmillan makes one of the finest stocks available.I much prefer them over H-S precision.
