Default Best .308

A while back I was on here and asked about the best .17 auto and someone came back with "Volquartsen". Thank you, Three of us each bought one and we are totally satisfied.

I am looking for a .308 for my son to deer hunt with. He is left handed and is 10 years old. Yes, I know he is a little young but in any case I would like him to get used to a gun now. He will be hunting on his own when he is 14 and will be hunting year after next with me. I believe he will be limited to a bolt action as he is left handed. The Browning micro is on the short list. Is there a model 7 Remington in a left handed model? Any others?

I am currently using a BLR in .308 and I do like it but would prefer an auto like the Model 100 Winchester carbine that I used previously. It started to jam and lost some accuracy. After shooting the BLR I would never go back to the Winchester (the BLR is far more accurate) but I really would prefer an auto as we are in self climbing tree stands. The BAR is far too heavy and I have had some jamming issues in cold weather with my .300 Winmag BAR. Any ideas for a reliable light weight .308 auto?

I have the Model 7 in a 308. I love it, but in my humble opinion, has way too much kick for a 10 year old, due to the light wieght. Try a 25 06 or a 7 08.

He currently shoots a Model 101 20 gauge and has shot a Remington 1100 20 gauge for two years and the kick doesn't bother him. He has shot his mother's Benelli Super 90 12 gauge (she's a lefty too) and is able to hit clays with it.

Do you know if the Model 7 will kick more than my BLR?

Not to my knowledge. I don't even see a left handed ADL on Remington's site though so it may not be showing everything. Unfortunately I think it will be hard to find a left-handed rifle to fit a 10 year old. If you do happen to find one I would go with 7mm-08 Rem or 260 Rem instead of 308 Win. He won't outgrow either cartridge and both are lighter in recoil then a 308 Win.

I would think so since the Model 7 Youth weighs 6 1/4 pounds and I think your BLR weighs more.

I don't think there is a lefty model 7..... I had a model 7 .260 for my wife.... kicks pretty good. I can imagine a .308 in that configuration would pack quite a shot.

For what it's worth, if you have your heart set on a .308 for your youngster, I'd go with a Remington 7600 pump with the short barrel. Also, I'd highly recommend a PAST recoil shield for the bench.... it'll really tame the recoil for a 10 year old.

Ruger makes nice left handed bolt action rifle in the M77 Mark II, but they don't carry a 308 from what I've seen, which is a great round IMHO. They do have the 25-06 and 270 which would be nice options, the 25-06 might be better for a younger shooter.
