Remington 740

I have a question / concern. I've just recently recieved a 49 yr old Remington Model 740 30.06 from my Dad who is too ill to continue hunting. Anyway, I took the gun to Gander Mountain to have new scope rings put on and bore sighted because I did not like the see through mount that was on the gun. At the range I shot @ 50 yds and I was 8" low. I have the adjustment turned all the way up and still shooting 7" low. At 100 yds I shot 5" low. The scope is a Leupold, but I don't know how old. What can I do to get more height adjustment ? Or is there another problem I should be thinking about.

I'd take it back to Gander Mountain and tell them about the problem. To me it sounds like you scope mounts are the problem. It would be hard to "eye ball" the problem because 8" at 50 yrds is only 16/60ths of one degree at the scope.

Alot of those 740, they have to shim. Not too uncommon. You have to take to a gunsmith or gander and have them
1. New rings/bases
2. Shim the ones you got.

Before they shim you want to center that scople vertically. You don't want a scope to be at its max adjustments.
