Default couple of fire arms questions

Hello I'm new here and this is my first post. I am going hunting next week for feral pigs in north carolina and wanted to know peoples opinions on what I should hunt with. I will either use my ultra slug hunter 12 gauge with a 1.5-4xscope or my browning a-bolt m1000 eclipse in 300 win. mag. with a leupold varx-III tactical scope with a harris bi-pod (it is set up for bench shooting). For a sidearm a .45acp or .357 sig with 147 grain HP's . Also what grain/type of bullet for .300 win. mag. I'm leaning towards my ultra slug hunter, the browning is a pretty expensive package if something should happen.

In my opinion the slug gun. With the scope on it you would have a better field of vision for the shorter range shots than with your tactial scope. If you use the 300 mag use 180g. strongly constructed premium bullets. Lightly consructed bullets at high speeds may fail you at close range.

Best Wishes

Agreed, go with the 12ga./slugs, and be sure to remember to leave that scope set on the
lowest power setting (1.5x). Good luck.

BTW, do you know how to climb trees fast

Im not sure of the size of pigs your shootin here but a 300 win mag droped my brother inlaws black bear at over 200 yards. so i think is should make short work of hogs.

The best thing to do with a pig is make as big a wound as possible. I like a buffalo bore 44 mag 305 grain, a 405 gr 45-70, or at least a 35 rem.

Hog hunting usually mean up close and personal, so I'd also go with the slug gun. As for the sidearm, you may be undergunned with either one. Hogs usually have very thick hide and the 45 and 357sig just won't have the penetration needed. I'd also suggest a 44mag or bigger with a very heavy bullet. Good luck and be safe.

The 300 Win Mag is indeed potent for pretty much anything in North America short of the big bears, but hog hunting in North Carolina will more than likely be a short range prospect in cover. Target acquisition is going to be the key and the less magnification you have the better. That is why I say go with the slug gun.

Thanks guys I pretty much made my mind with the slug gun. Hopefully my friend willl let me use a .44 mag. To bad I don't have the money because this could be another excuse for me to buy another handgun(.500 s&w ?) I don't think the little lady could argue with my safety.

Hey RJH, when the little lady shoots you down on spending a grand on a 500S&W, you could say, then how about spending less than half that for a nice used 44mag? If she's a typical woman, they have a hard time passing up on "deals" like that.hehe
