Default 30-30 Deer Load

My hunting buddy is using his grandpa"™s old Marlin 30-30 this season for deer. We where thinking the Winchester 150 Power Point would be a good choice, and the gun shoots it well. Would that be a good smallish deer load or is there another option that would be better? I've Never shot at deer with the 30-30, so I need the help. Thanks for yall"™s time.

Win. 150 gr. Power Point would be a fine choice. Can buy it at Wal-Mart for less than $9/box. I would limit shots to 150 yds. 100 if shooting iron sights.

Another option in a factory load would be the PMC Starfire.

For smaller deer the Win. 150gr. PP should be okay. As you noted, it shoots good in
your rifle, and that's half the battle.
Personally, I preferred the 170gr. loads when I used my Marlin 30-30. You might want
to give the Rem. 170gr. Core-Lokt a try, or even move up to the Federal 170gr. premium loading which uses a Nosler partition bullet.
The 150gr loads will give you just a little bit better/flatter trajectory, but the 170gr. loads should give an edge when it comes to penetration. But, both should take care of
most whitetail deer.

As long as a load shoots well from a 30-30 Win then performance should be about the same as any other load. The 30-30 is what it is.

That's what I have always used in my 30-30 and it has performed very well.

I like the 150 grain myself.
