some good suggestions so far... here are a few more 1) Ruger #1 no action, makes for a shorter gun regardless of caliber. 2) remington 600 or 660 -the prdacessor to the model7 3)savage 99 - in a 250 savage there might not be a better womans/kids gun caliber combination. 4)Remington 673 ?(I think they sell this in the 270 short mag.) have fun hunting w/ the wife
a gun for the wife? I would think a 223 would knocker arse over teakettle...
Oh you meant for her to use? I first thought 270 but you said 308 and thats a GREAT caliber for a lil woman. Riflewise check out the stainless model 7 in that cal. Stainless, light and compact (synthetc stock as well). Would be an awfully easy rifle for her and still do what needs to be done.
two years ago i bought my wife a rem model 7 s/s in 260 rem and i carry the gun most of the time, it's sweet shooting plenty of deer killin power and my 10yr old grandson will shoot it. i would suggest a 260, 7mm-08, or a 223

Savage seems to make some nice, light, compact rifles. Got a 30.06 myself. Only drawback I have found to light and small is that they kick like mules. If you look around you can pick up a savage for pretty cheap. If she doesn't like it sell it and get something she likes but I do agree with the let her pick it out part. She will be the one shooting it.
