If you are looking for a fun rifle to shoot then go ahead and buy a AR 15. But if you want a serious varmit rifle than you are far better off with a bolt action. As for caliber you will get many different opinions from many others.

Best Wishes

Regardless of what some might say, an AR can make a fine varmint rifle. I have a Colt HBAR flattop w/20" bbl that I use for varmints. Will print most all loads at 1 1/4" but have one that is consistent 3/4". You will be limited only by money. The Colt Accurized Rifle would be a good choice for about $1100. Check out some of the custom makers like Clark Custom Guns, Les Baer, Wilson Combat. There are becoming more custom ARs available guaranteeing 1/2" groups. I have seen the Clark for about $1300 and the Baer and Wilson rifles over 2 grand. For a little less you should look at the DPMS and Rock River Arms offerings. I have read very good things about the Rock River rifle. Pick up a Shotgun News. Lots of ads for ARs.

Some lessons I have learned playing with ARs. Be wary of the "kits" and no name components. Any AR I buy from now on will be flattop. You can always put a detachable carry handle on if you want but a scope on top of a handle is ridiculous.

Also, whatever you buy make sure it has a good trigger. Wait, I mean an excellent trigger. The run of the mill ARs have adequate triggers for most work, but will not do for varmint shooting. I learned this with the HBAR. Would have been worth the extra $$ for the trigger in the Accurized Rifle. Look for Jewell or J-P Enterprise triggers in your more expensive guns. Rock River Arms is supposed to have a good trigger also.

If you want the best get the Les Baer, guarnteed accuracy, sweet shooting rifle. If you are like me and can't afford the Les Baer the Bushmaster flattop is another sweet shooting rifle along with the Armalite.

The AR-15 can make for an excellent varmint gun, especially if you get the right setup.
