Which is the better deal? I'm looking at a mossberg 500 2 3/4 & 3" shell chamber realtree camoed 26" barrel vs a synthetic rem 870 express 28" barrel. Also I looked at a mossberg 835 ulti mag ported barrel, 2 3/4 to 3 1/2" chamber camoed for $25.00 more. The only problem I'd have with the 835 is you can't shoot slugs through it unless you get a different barrel. That'd be an additional $100.00 or so.
Can I shoot slugs out of the 500 & 870 without having to buy additional barrels? I didn't see anything written on the barrel like the 835 had. I don't have a shotgun now and am wondering which is the better one. Both probably do a very job job. The only one I handled was the 835 and it's a nice gun, I think it had the 24" barrel, it seemed fairly short. Also I think both mossbergs have the neon glo sights.
i have a 870 turkey express mag....my turkey gun with a 21 inch barrel....and a mossberg 500 with a 28inch barrel....if i could only have one gun id go with a remington i think....the mossberg never let me down...and probably never will....only thing i havent killed with it is a deer.....i might use it with slugs someday...i got the slug barrel....just dont really need another deer rifle now....but i may...all i need is scope rings and im set if i want to.....ive shot 100s of rounds in one day without cleaning....to go back out the next day and do it all again....without cleaning.....im rough on that gun...one day i goose hunted in the rain that morning....went home...cleaned it because it was wet and dirty from the grass seeds ect.....then went out dove hunting.....heavy steel loads to light dove loads in one day.....i dont think that gun can be hurt....but i think the remington actions are nicer....mossbergs are kinda sloppy....but they work...either way youll have a good working shotgun.....handle them all.....see what you like.....im not a fan of 835s because i walk ALOT.......and they seem like boat anchors to me......that why my turkey gun wiehgs like..5 or 6lbs.....the 500 isnt THAT bad...but i think they make their stocks kinda bulky....i never really looked at a regular 870 express...mine is diffrent....i dont know how they are.....id handle them all....see what fits best and what i liked best and go from there....they will all work fine.......its all about what you like.......

Like mauser06 said, the mossbergs are heavier then @#$%. I think the remingtons are made better, id take a remington over a mossberg anyday.
obviously the military doesn't think so, they are replacing the 870's with Mossbergs, seeing as how Mossbergs are the ONLY shotguns to have passed ALL the tests the military put them through. But if you feel like honing your barrel and forcing cone....and finishing the barrel where Remington left off, go ahead and get one.

I just dealt with the same delima. 870 or 500? I chose the Mossberg. Stock fit ME better and action FELT smoother in MY hands. (Note the key words in there ME, FELT, and MINE). It's all very personal and subjective. In the few weeks that I've had mine I've put several 100 rounds (probably 2 cases) through it with not so much as a hiccup yet. I haven't cleaned it yet either. Gonna do that tonight though. They can both shoot rifled (foster type) slugs without an additional barrel, as can just about any modern smoothbore shotgun. Handle, shoulder, and cycle both. The gun will tell you which is right for you. You won't be dissappointed with either one.
REMINGTON 870! I hate Mossbergs I had 2 i have one now I traded it in for a.... 870 man i ripped that guy off... Anyway I have had trouble with the 500s and never a bit of trouble with the 870s

I've carried the same 870 Wingmaster since 1977. Never had a problem with the gun. I did replace the barrel so I could have screw-in choke tubes. About the only thing I NEVER look at when I'm shopping is a new shotgun. Does that tell you how great the 870 is? Jim
