Default another 45 70 for the chuck wagon

Just couldn't resist. I was in Scheels to pick up a box of ammo and I noticed a new Ruger #1 on board in blue steel. I was thinking that since they had their sox sued off it would have an 8 lb trigger w/creep. Nope. Crisp and decent!! That pup is mine!

Gotta scope it though now that I am in my 50's. Need something with some decent eye relief. Next time I am in Cabela's in Kansas City I will pick up some Buffalo Bore for it.

I have an M8 Luepold 4X on my single shot 45-70. Another good one is the Simmons Aetec with 5 inches of eye relief. They are a tough as nails scope and pretty darn clear and crisp. I just picked up my third one at Scheels in Fargo ND. Good Luck with our new OLD CLASSIC. I just got a new Encore in 45-70 to add to my Marlin and NEF 45-70's. The NEF is a good shooter and will handle loads heavier than my shoulder can take. I like the 405 Lead Flat nose cast bullet with 13.0 grains of Unuiqe powder. Its consistant and accurate @ about 1150 fps and easy on the shoulder.

Default RE: Ruger #1 45 70 for the chuck wagon

James, thanks for the recommendations.

Looking closely at the action I found some tan & grainy particulate matter that looked really harsh. No biggy. I always clean up what I bring home. So I break open the manual on the Ruger #1 and go through the steps. Then, it says, "put a slave pin in the hammer strut"... so there is none in the box, and I go to the Mrs' finishing nails and look for a possible fit. I try. Bad guess, instant bend. I went on with the rest of the cleaning and got it spiffed up and reassembled except for the hammer strut assembly. My "slave pin" was a loser. Finally, pointing somewhere safer than my face I finally work out the bent slave pin and ker-plink MEOW! I hit the cat in the fanny but he lived.

Tried hard; maybe when I was younger I could have gotten that spring pushed down but I didn't want to take any more chances. The new Ruger will have to wait a few weeks to go shooting.

Now if anyone can tell me what I should be using for a "slave pin" for a Ruger #1 hammer strut assembly, that would be so helpful! :-)

Gotta love those number 1's when breaking them apart. Cheer up it gets easier everytime you do it . I can do one blindfolded. I use a drill bit a real small drill bit when doing it ..finishing nails won't do it been there and done that.
