I've had better luck with a grid bore sighter, than the laser. The grid gets you closer to zero IMO.

I have the SSI and it works great. I set up the target at the end of the hall in my house and steadied the rifle on my kitchen table. When I mounted a new scope on my ABOLT, I used the SSI to bore sight and was within 2 inched of being perfect at 100 yards, with no windage adjustment neccessary whatsoever. The only issue I have with it is that I wish it came with 50 caliber o-rings so you could use it with a muzzleloader. If you were industrious you could probably find them at a hardware store...

Good luck-

Do any of these devices really work better than the "peering through the bore" method?

My experience is that the old fashioned method is easy and accurate enough for getting the shot on the paper for further zeroing at the range. A gizmo is not needed because in practice, the same number of shots is needed at the range whether I've used a gizmo or done it the old way.

However, it would be handy to have a gizmo that is really accurate enough to confidently check the scope after a rough transport (e.g. airline trip).

They are not bad, they can get you close and allow for qucik checking of zero...but half the fun of a gun is shooting it.

I just can't seem to pay the amount of money they want for them.
I just take a bout 20 rnds. and sit down. fire and start clicking.
seems to work well for me.
