RE: Competition
I'd say go get you a Rem. 1187 and find a 3gun club. A lot of people start out with pump shotguns, I did, and I quickly learned that the extra money for an autoloader is money well spent if you want to be serious. Which it kind of makes sense, who really thinks they've got the right beginners gear when they spent $650 on their pistol, $700 on their rifle, and $300 on their shotgun? Unless you're REALLY REALLY good, there's no way a pump competes with an auto.
You might look at USPSA in addition to the IDPA. Do a search for 3gun matches in Ohio online, or call up nearby ranges and ask them if they know who you should call, or if they do any matches. I'm certain you'll find matches that any one gun would be used in that way, even if you don't find a 3gun club.
3gun is the way to go though, there's nothing like multigun action shooting!!!
