Default 20 gauge for deer

I realize there are better choices, but for now this is all I own and I am unable to purchase anything else. I wanted to hear your thoughts about deer hunting with a 20. I know my range is pretty limited, but my stands will be on small plots so I'm not worried about range right now. My guns(both 20 gauge) have smooth bore barrels. What do you think of slug v/s buckshot?

I'm so glad I found this forum, looks great. I look forward to learning from and someday contributing to this board. Thanks for your input.

My 1st deer I killed was with a 20. They have pleny of power for deer. I would say slugs not buckshot.

That 20ga. is great for deer. If you could get a rifled barrle, and a scope on it then you would reach out further. But from what you have stick with slugs, and with a smooth bore barrel use any of the foster type slugs from remington, federal, or winchester, or the original brennekes

The best way to find out would probably be to buy some different brand slugs and buckshot. Good Luck.

A 20 ga. with slugs is totally lethal on deer. A smoothbore with rifled (Foster style) slugs or a rifled barrel with sabot slugs will, most assuredly, put Bambi down. No need to worry.
