The .270Win, along with the newer .270Weatherby and .270WSM is a wonderful, long range shooter, capable of taking elk, moose, deer and on done the game range of animals. The .270Win will kill any coyote at long range. With FMJ bullets, you should not see much of an exit wound. The problem with .270Win for coyote, is the report. That rifle has a real booming sound when it goes off. Sometimes two coyote are working in on your call and when you shoot one with the .270Win the report is so loud that the second coyote always skeedaddles off. Sometimes, when you use a .223Rem or .222Rem the report is mostly swallowed up by wind and will not spook the second coyote.

Bass man, no matter what caliber you choose, to avoid pelt damage you need a combination of two things: a hard., non-expanding bullet, and a relatively low (not over 1600 FPS) MV. At full velocities, in a caliber like the .270, even a full-jacketed bullet will often make a horrific exit wound. Ask any doctor who has treated combat casualties!

I have and love the 270 win. But for coyotes; with minimum pelt damage you have to hand load 150 gr. bullets and reduce the velocity down to 2400 ft/sec, and this will still damage pelts. I have put diner plate holes through pelts using 130 gr. at 3000 ft/sec. I do not save the pelts, and I shoot coyotes for control purposes only, I use the 270 on coyotes because it is the only rifle I have (other than a .22) .
