Default Tap Size?

I just wanted to know what tap size is used for mounting scopes.

There are two sizes of screws that are generally used for screwing mount bases to rifles. These are 6X48 and 8X40. The 6X48's are seen more, but the 8X40's give a stronger mounting job. Of course, they require different size holes also!
