I have a Remington 11-87 that is about 12 years old and I have always taken care in keeping it clean, oiled, etc.
While dovehunting yesterday, it suddenly started jamming after firing only one shot. All I would have to do was press the silver gadget where you put the shells in to make the chamber close and put the next shell in. The first shot was ejecting fine. After fighting with it and shooting maybe five or six times, with 5-10 minutes between each shot, the barrel got really hot after one shot and the barrel was emitting an unusual amount of smoke after the one shot. So I stopped hunting......
One of the folks hunting with me said that Remington had once had a recall of the barrels on some of the 11-87's. Said that they could explode using just standard shells.
Anyone know where I can locate this information? They said it had been many years ago???????
I am still searching Remington's website. Sadly, the nearest gunsmith is an hour away, so I was hoping someone could fill me in so just one trip to the gunshop would be all that was necessary.[&:]
Thanks in advance!!

You can call Remington's 800 number that is on there web site. Or you can do what i did and sell that heavy piece of crap and buy a SBE II. Don't get me wrong I think that remington is the work horse of all guns but the 11-87 is worst gun that they have produced and their shotguns are very heavy.
deerhuntress,
The timing of your post is uncanny. I have had my 11-87 for about 17 years now and just had it totally stripped down and cleaned by a gunsmith last winter. While dove hunting this past Saturday, it jammed on my three different times. Until having it cleaned, it had NEVER jammed on me. Well, now it looks like I too have a jammer.
Until reading your post I had never heard of the smoking/exploding barrel problem. I sure hope that doesn't happen! [&:]
Good luck getting yours fixed.

I dunno what birdbustin is talking about but my 1187 Premier 20 guage is very light and has never jamed using remington shotshells. The only thing it doesnt like is the winchester loads with the silver bases. other than that its a really nice gun.
I suggest the obvious. Which you have probably already done. But take all the way apart. Look for anything inside the action. They have alot of items inside that can get jammed or bent. Alot of springs, (not coil springs). Also see if the action bolt is cycling the whatchcallit (drawing a blank) that lifts the shells up into the action. Listen, all guns have failures. Alot of these guys have alot of money and think if it costs the most, it must be good. The gun has served you well for 12 years. Tell us you outcome.
Several years ago Remington had a class action lawsuit against them involving shotgun barrels but I believe the affected barrels were all on guns prior to the 11-87. I had three that fell into the range (2-870s and an 1100) but my 11-87 was not included.
Are you by chance shooting a Wal-mart cheapy shell? Or a very light load? Say one ounce or less? My 2400 winchester will not cycle anything under 1-1/8 ounce very well. With 1-1/4's being it's prefered diet. Try a heavier shell, (if your not already) and see what happens.
