The light mag load from hornday is a spical disined round to increas the voliciety of a standerd round,

if your gun is in good shape the load should be fine.
they meet the factory spec. for the 270.
I have uses them in my old 30-06 and have had good resulits.

They also have heavy mag loads witch increases volicity of mag over the standerd load.

The "light mags" can be shot in a regular rifle.
They do some special blending of powders to get a little extra velocity while staying within the pressure limits.

I was going to post that I thought that they weren't recommended in a semiauto, but looking at their website, I can't find any info like that. I know that Federal's High Energy are not recommended for a semi though

Don't know about the Hornady website, but the Browing BAR manual on the Browning website specifically states "HORNADY LIGHT MAGNUM AMMUITION SHOULD NOT BE USED IN A SEMI-AUTOMATIC RIFLE SUCH AS THE BAR. IT MAY DAMAGE THE FIREARM."

As For what load for deer 30-100yds would be all most any factory load with bullet weights from 130-150gr would be fine.

If close range is your norm the 150gr might be best.
but if longer shots are the norm the 130 class might be what you are looking for.

Chuck is correct that they're not typically recommended for autos, but specifically .30-06 Lt. mags aren't supposed to be fired in M-1Garands, and if memory serves .308 Lt. mags aren't to be used in M-1A's, because of the nature of their gas system, it's a bit more sensitive to pressure variances than other known autos, and it can be damaged by high pressure rounds.

They're pretty much a waste of money, from my experience. As much as they cost you'd think they'd make a .30-06 good for deer to 2000yrds or elephant at 500yrds, while they pretty much don't do anything but give you a little more umph, and not really enough umph that they're worth shooting or buying. They tend to add a good bit of recoil too, so you've got a harder kicking gun that's more expensive to shoot, but that isn't any more accurate at any longer range nor is it really capable of any larger game species than with standard loads.

Basically, they're a marketing gimic.

You sure can! It gives enhanced ballistics at the standard SAAMI pressures. It uses very slow powders in quantities no ordinary handloader can get into the case! I don't know if they put the powder in before putting the necks on the cases like the Brits used to do with Cordite, but they have a "special loading technique". If you pull a bullet on one of these cartridges and dig out all the powder, you can't get it all back in!!
