Default Rust on Barrel

I have an H&R slug gun that I've owned for less than a yr. It was used , cleaned & stored roperly after the season. Problem is , I took it out yesterday and it had rust on the barrel up by the scope. I wiped off what I could and oiled her up , but checked again , some spots are still there. Any1 know some products I can use to take care of this ?

Wow, sounds like you live in a very humid area or near salt water. Only thing you could do to touch it up permantly is a tad of degreaser with a blue kit and steel wool. And touch up the blueing. Or just call em beauty marks.

A gun smith found some light rust on a shotgun I took in with an unrelated problem. He used a very find grade of steel wool with a few drops of gun oil on it to smooth away the rust. Heavy rust leaves pitting which doesn't rub off in this manner and requires more comprehensive measures.

My first concern, in your shoes, would be to figure out what is causing the rust and to change this element of my gun environment. Maybe your guns are kept in a closet near the shower and the repeated cycles of humidity associated with showering is the cause. You aren't keeping your gun stored in a gun case, are you? Most people I know -- the above gun smith for example -- say keeping a gun stored in a gun case is the quickest way to breed rust. There may be some sort of anti-rust gun-sock you can store your guns in to prevent rust, I don't know.

Agreed fine steel wool some gun oil will take care of the rust, if it isn't pitted. Also would find a better location for storage or try to determine what happened. I don't like the cold blue stuff, it rubs off and rarely matchs. Keep it oiled maybe try some KROIL which penetrates metals extremely well for added protection. If it really bothers you get reblued by a gunsmith.

000 steel wool with gun oil on it should do the trick. I check my guns once a month and keep a rag handy with a little oil on it to wipe them off. I also agree to keep your guns out of the basement, away from AC vents, out of gun cases, basically away from moisture as much as possible. There was an article about this in Outdoor Life a few months ago, the author's best friend left his prized Sweet 16 in a leather gun case only to find pitted rust when he removed the gun several months later. The author suggests that there is no magic trick, you need to check you guns once per month and wipe them down with a very light coat of oil, especially if you touch the metal, salt and oils left by finger prints will cause rust to quickly form. If you have a gun safe or locker or even keep it in a closet, a dehumidifiing rod is well worth the extra time and effort. You can even use a 60 watt light bulb left on at the bottom of the closet/safe to create warm dry air that rises and keeps a dry ciriclation of air moving around the gun, this will help.
