Default Syn stocks

I hate to have to change my old stock, but, I sort of cracked it...Not too bad, I did it while hunting and took a nasty tumble.

It's my standard ole deer huntin rifle, Winchester model 70 .270. Bought new in 1972 (or abouts). It has served me well although I don't take her out as much as I used to...More into the bowhunting thing now...

The questions are: Should I go synthetic? Should I just get a replacement walnut stock? Who makes a good syn stock? Point me in the right direction...

I like the syn stock made by Hogue,I think they make one for your rifle ,most are pillar beded .The stock has soft rubber pannels on the grip and forearm area .I have one on a custom mauser.

I'd break the wood stock (if necessary) and epoxy it.

If you're serious about a synthetic I'd go with Borden or McMillan.

Personally I would buy a laminated stock from Boyds You still get the great looks of wood with the weather wicking abilites of a synthetic. They have great stocks at exceptional prices. $65.42 for their VIP (virtual inlet part) stock. All you will need to do is apply your desired finish. Your M70 should literally drip right in.

I think if you like your old stock, i'd also just fix that one.

One thing i don't like about synthetic stocks is, i've noticed if anything touches or rubs on them while your walking the sound is "unnatural", and alerts animials faster than if the same thing rubs on a wood stock. I've seen this happen more than one time walking in taller brush, and a limp touches the stock. Animials are use to hearing wood (limb) on wood (stock) , but not wood on a synthetic material.

The thing i have against laminated stocks is, they are heavier than non laminated wood stocks. This may not matter to you, but i've always wanted my rifles as "light" as possible for the cal. i'm carrying.

Yes, i do understand the advantages of a synthetic and or laminated stocks, and i've owned, bedded, and even made my own in years past.

I am an H-S precision fan myself. The bordens and McMillians require alot fo fitting.

If you partial to feel of wood, I think you would like a boyds. Does require fitting, but a little inleting and glass, your set.

I am also a fan of HS Precision stocks. I have them on all my bolt action rifles.

all of the above stocks are very good. i use bell&carlson.many styles and colors. the selling point to me was how they handled in wetter weather. they never get slick.
