I would say a 12 gauge like a Remington 870 express. 870's have a proven track record for being reliable. This would let you use slugs or buckshot for deer & bear, and regular shot loads for the birds.

I'll weigh in and say the Mossberg 500 is a good shotgun for what you have to pay. I've had a combo (bird and smoothbore slug barrels) for quite a while and have killed deer, turkey, upland birds and rabbits. If you go with one of these, try to get a combo with a rifled slug barrel, and a field barrel that takes choke tubes. You can find used ones for near your price of 200.

Come to think of it, there is one for sale on this forum. Maybe you two can stike a deal.

I'd, like, look for a good used Ithaca M37 or a Mossburg M500 in 12-ga. and use it for everything with shot for the small critters and slugs for deer and bear!

Buy either the Remington 870, or the Mossberg 500. The Mossberg maybe a better buy, you maybe able to purchase the combo 12ga. rifled/cantilever barrel, and a 26 or 28" barrel with a few choke tubes, i would say in the $350 range.
