Default Leupold Scopes

All this talk of Leupold scope and all, I emailed John Barsness. He seems to test out more scopes than anybody. I can't beleive it, but he wrote me back a detailed letter.

He said, that the once piece design is marketing gimick. Also said he will be doign alot of tests with the VX models coming soon.

Well, right from the start on his letter, he said, "Leupold has been testing scopes a long time and know how to do it." So he is going to be a little biased. But I do respect his opinion.

He is a writer with no recognized training in the optics field.

That Leupold itself took advantage of with the Vari xIII and LPS model scopes. Funny how if they did change the VX III to other than a 1 piece design, that the tune changes. Fact is it is all marketing when it comes to their own products and if they changed the tube design it would be shooting themselves in the foot to admit otherwise, wouldn't you agree?

BC, the fact I and others have asked Leupold for clarification on the tube design of the New VX III series and come up with very different answers worries me to why if they have proven no real pay off for the 1-piece design it is not public information!!!! Maybe I am paranoid but I don't have a warm fuzzy feeling about this lack or reluctance of information.

One solid tube vs. two pieces screwed and/ or glued together?????? Hmmmm, I think I will stick with the solid piece of metal.

I have had two piece tubes come apart at the junction but never a one piece tube. Wonder why? Could it be because there is nothing to come apart with a one piece tube? So I conclude from my own experiences that he is full of crap.

Well, I won't say he's full of crap. He tests more guns and scopes, than probably half of us put together. And thats experience. He's a nice enough guy. But I also understand that his success in the writing business has to do with his contacts. And bad mouthing his contacts, is not a good idea. I do believe he would be honest in his evaluations, but he would put it in a nice way. He has always been political when it come to bashing.

Stubble, I do have reconigized training, in optics, and tell ya right now. He is more qualified than me in evaluating a scopes duribility. I work with a dozen foreigners who is reconigized in the fields of classic optics, with 100 patents under their belt and publish in OSA and IEEE every month, but they sure won't be able to tell you about rifle scopes

I'll take the marketing gimmick rather then a multipiece tube anyday of the week provided everything inside is equal. He does have a lot of buddies at Leupold and Leupold still makes beautiful scopes but there are better for the same price.
