Default Savage 99 ????

I have been lusting over the old Savage 99's for a while now, and they are quickly climbing to the top of my "gotta have" list! For you Savage 99 owners a couple of questions. First how is their accuracy in general? Second, what are some of the things to look for in a 99, and last what are their problem areas?
Thanks!

Hi JMM:

Good luck in your quest for the Model 99. I shoot one occasionally, but it belongs to my father in-law. He uses it for blacktails in eastern Washington now, .300 Savage. The rifle deserves its "cult-like" status. I believe he has used it for over 30 years, for elk in his youth. Accuracy is good, and seems to be best with the plain green & yellow box. There aren't many in great shape, either pitted barrels/bores etc. If you can find one in good shape in .300 Savage, set up a trust and bequeath it to your grandshildren's grandchildren for generations to enjoy.

Good Luck.

Frank, after years of wanting I finally broke down and picked up a Savage 99E in 308 Win. What finally made me just have to get one was shooting my neighbors 99E, also a 308 Win. As far as accuracy is concerned I believe they are more than enough for hunting. Some even hold their own with bolts. The only problems I have heard on them is sometimes the bolt stop comes loose and the bolt can come back too far causing the ejector to pop out. It is a simple fix with a screwdriver and loc-tite. Other than that I think the 99s are as sound as can be. I am in the process right now of refinishing my stock. Makes for another delima come hunting season. Do I take the 99 or something else? Sweet misery.

Frank, I have a 1950 model 99eg in .300 Savage with a 24" barrel. This rifle has a Marble's peep sight mounted on the tang. It will do MOA off the bench. Never had a problem with mine. Its one of my most prized possessions.

I prefer the older rifles with the rotary magazines and counter--safety on the lever. After 1962 (I think), model 99's had clip magazines and tang safeties. Still good rifles but not my first choice in 99's.
