Default 454 sugestions

I'm planning on buying a Taurus raging bull in 454 Casull soon. I do reload . Do any of you that have or do shoot the 454 have any recommendations as to a factory load to start with and maybe a bullet powder combo they like? I'm not asking for your pet load that you spent time working up and taking a short cut; just bullet and powder combo .... I'll do the work myself. Thanks in advance.

The taursus is a nice gun ,but with the porting it is extra loud! I shoot a Ruger witha 7 1/2 barrel ,while not as good looking it is strong as a tank and shoots good 3-4 inch at 100 yds. Winchester has a 250 gr load at 1300 fps (I think) that is a good deer and target load . I reload a hornady #45200 250 gr bullet with 34 gr Win. 296 in a hornady case with rem #7 1/2 primer this load gives me 1600 fps . This load has acounted for 7 deer the last 4 years , but it is still LOUD!

johnch,
Thanks for the information and the thoughts on the porting ..... I hadn't considered that aspect. While target shooting and wearing hearing protection I doubt either would be bad but in the field...... hmmm. Someting else to ponder.

I shoot a Ruger 7.5" and yes they are loud. my ears rang for a few days after this past handgun season. I shoot factory Win platinum tips. I like the design of the bullet and the way it mushrooms. I haven't recovered any bullets since they just blow right through but the advertised pics of the mushroom looks real good. I haven't sighted mine in past 25 yds but it groups good enough at that distance with my red dot scope on it. I don't hunt where i have a chance at a long shoot anyway. watch out if it is raining, i have houge grips and wolf springs in mine and a wet guns likes to slip out of your hands with the recoil.

Yeah they are REALLY loud.[:-] My buddy shoots a Ruger SR .480 which is very close to the .454 and it ROARS. I can only imagine a ported .454
You may SERIOUSLY want to check out a Walkers Game Ear at least for your near ear if you are hunting with a revolver like that. It will enhance your hunting hearing and the muffler circuit will save your precious hearing.
If I was a serious handgun hunter I would own one for each ear.

outdorrsmen, since you replaced the ruger factory grips can I assume that they leave a lot to be desired? I've never heard of the wolf springs ... can you elaborate?

Matt/PA thanks for your input .... the porting was what was steering me towards the Taurus but now I'm really reconsidering the Ruger Super Redhawk

I own a Ruger SRH .454, and I like it a lot.

The grips do leave a little to be desired. They are cushy enough to absorb a good bit of recoil, but the do stop short of completely covering the backstrap which ca add a bit of pain to the shooting experience. The .454, in any form, is LOUD. It's a boomer for sure.

The Ruger is also the strongest of the DA .454 revolvers, by far. It's built like the proverbial brick s***house. Mine is also VERY accurate.

Asthetically, some think that the Ruger SRH isn't all that nice to look at, but I don't agree. I think it looks sharp, especially with the very nice Target Grey stainless, which has the added advantage to not being like a signal mirror to every deer within sight distance...something else to consider. Why people dress in head-to-toe camo and carry a bright shiny stainless gun to this day boggles my mind. Like if the deer can't see you, the glare off your gun won't bother them either...because there are SOOO many things in the woods that are naturally reflective ! [:@]

I have a stainless steel Raging Bull in 454. It is an extremely accurate handcannon. It gets its greatest accuracy from 300gr+ bullets, and ball powders. Win 296 and H110 digest extremely well.

Here is one of my loads:

Winchester Brass, Fed 105 primer, 29.5gr of Win 296 powder, and a Hornady 300gr XTP bullet.

I have also loaded up with 30 to 32gr of powder, but it depends on what you want to use it for.

Clearcut I am wondering what speeds are you getting from those loads? I have a SS Raging Bull as well with the 8 3/8" barrel and topped off with a Leupold scope. I love my gun it is very accurate, my friend has the Ruger. We shoot them side by side, and with hearing protection there is not much diference in noise and muzzle blast. But there is a lot of difference with the recoil. My gun with the break and scope is a baby compared to his ruger. I would love to own a Freedom Arms M83 in the .454 but even I would not sell my Raging Bull I would just own two .454's.
