Default Sun Shades?

I was showing my new gun and scope to a friend and he asked me if I was plannin on using a sun shade on my scope. I said no I have never used one in the past, or see a need for one. He seemed to agree and then said that a shade only takes away from the scope's field of view and the light gathering abilities. I still don't want one but I am wondering out of curioiuosity is my friend correct. And aren't they only realy useful in compition? I don't know?

Leupold labels them as competition lens shades. I have one for one of my scopes and have never used it for hunting. I have never seen anyone use them for hunting and I don"™t think they would be very pratical. They might protect your lens but also could collect allot of dirt or snow without you knowing about it until it came time to shoot.

I used mine before I slipped and wacked it and bent it.[:@] I never noticed any reduction in field ov view or light gathering ability at all. I really liked using it.

They are very useful during early morning and evening when the sun is low on the horizon. The cut down on any sun glare very effectively should you have a shot at an animal that is right in front of the sun.

My father had this exact scenario happen to him last elk season early in the morning when a bull stopped right in front of the sun and he could not see it. It turned and trotted away and never offered another shot. Had he had a sun shade on he would have been able to see it and make a shot.
