RE: saiga .7.62x51 (308 winchester) anybody use one for hunting
Never heard of saiga. Is it a ***anese rifle MFR? If so, I guess I'd be interested in seeing what you think when you get one. The ***anese are great manufacturers. The price is right too. If the quality is in line with the price, I might stick with a Savage though.
RE: saiga .7.62x51 (308 winchester) anybody use one for hunting
No, Saiga is not ***anese. They are made in Russia and are basically sporterized AKs. I have looked at a few and I am not impressed. They are clunky and awkward to say the least. Even though the AK is probably one of the best designs ever for a military arm, I don't think it translates to a hunting rifle very well. I haven't heard anything about the accuracy yet, but it might be ok. Usually accuracy from that type of rifle is minute of pieplate which would be ok for plinking, but iffy for hunting.

Guess I'd have to agree then. By the time you manage to get the thing shooting with acceptable accuracy, you could have just as soon gone with something like a Savage, or any other new/used hunting rifle. Nothing wrong with 308 though.
I shot a "regular" AK once. It was fun, but I wouldn't want one for hunting.

I used one this past season as my bad weather gun...Snowed here all season long... They are plenty accurate providing shots are under 200 yards as mine shoots 3 to 3.5 inch groups at that range. The only problem I have with it is the trigger but you can get used to it. I cleanly harvested 2 bucks and 2 does with it..no problems. You must use a compact scope as well or the ejected brass will beat the heck out of a regular lenght scope.

RE: saiga .7.62x51 (308 winchester) anybody use one for hunting
since i posted .. i bought one and headed to rio salado sportsmen shooting range (mesa,az) they have a 200, 300, and 5oo yard range so i decided to go for the 5oo yard just to see if once i had a feel for the rifle i could see about accuracy. I know that the major complaint is the forend being too far forward but that is an easy fix..you can convert it back to an original ak look or just cut down the butt stock and that is exactly what i did a week ago.it has enough accuracy to shoot an animal at public land ranges.
i cant wait till the come out with 30.06 and .270 models this fall...
RE: saiga .7.62x51 (308 winchester) anybody use one for hunting
Is it possible to mount a scope on one?
I've been thinking about getting one since I first saw one about a year ago, but have heard almost nothing of them from others, so I've been hesitant.

The Saiga, is built in on the AK frame, by Kalishnikov.
I have wanted to try one out since they are reasonably priced. I have not had the chance to shoot one yet. I did handle one in the gun shop, and to me it did not shoulder too well, and the forearm felt too long! I was wondering if anyone noticed the same thing, seems as though Glock did!
Personally, I would want one for plinking, not for hunting! I prefer the traditional "hunting styles" for hunting. But as I said, that's just my preference, if you have any gun that has the accuracy needed for hunting, by all means use it!
I would like to shoot the Saiga in 7.62X 39 or .223, for the cheaper shooting!
