The U.S. Model 1903A3 Rifle, manufactured 1903 to 1945, this rifle replaced the Krag-Jorgensen and was the primary U.S. Battle Rifle until 1936, when it was replace by the M1 Garand. In 1942 Remington Arms redesigned the rifle using stamped parts and designated it the 1903A3. The '03 rifle saw service all the way into the early stages of the Vietnam War, were it was still utilized as a sniper rifle in the form of the 1903A4.

AT the muzzle, if its an original barrel it should be marked RA (with a flaming bomb under it) with the date (mo-year). An original barrel will have a 4-groove rifling pattern, a replacement barrel can possibly have a 2-groove rifling pattern.

rear sight adjustments- The back of the rear sight will have several small lines and an index line on the bottom. line the '0' line with the index to set to mechanical zero. Each click of the windage = 1 minute. the elevation slider clicks from 100 yards up to 800 yards by clicking it backwards/upwards.

Magazine cutoff- it the lever on the left side below the rear sight- in the up'on' position it will lock the bolt back to prevent you from closing the bolt on an empty magazine- very handy in combat, also handy while shooting matches. in the down 'off' position, it doesn't allow the bolt to go all the way back- can be used with a full magazine to handfeed rounds and keep the magazine in reserve, but also makes for easy singleloading.

There are 3 different stock configurations- straight (being the most likely original conffiguration) scant- used in replacement stocks that has a semi pistol grip, and 'C' which were used mainly on 03-A4 sniper rifles but can show up as replacement stocks on other springfields.

If the magazine cutoff is in the 'on' position, you need to push down on the follower to close the bolt- also putting the magazine cutoff in between (sticking straight out) will allow you to remove the bolt.
